Syrian opposition's Cairo group calls on Moscow to increase pressure on al-Assad's regime to participate in Geneva negotiations

GENEVA. March 29 (Interfax) - The Syrian opposition's Cairo group has discussed 'four tracks' of the political settlement at the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva during a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov and called on the Russian side to put pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government, Jamal Suleiman, leader of the group, said.

"We have met with Gatilov. Our dialogue was focused on negotiations, in particular, on the balance between 'four tracks.' We expressed to Gatilov our support to de Mistura's ideas and his views regarding 'four tracks,'" he told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday.

"We asked Mr. Gatilov for Russia to put more pressure on the regime so it would participate in the negotiating process more seriously," Suleiman said.

Gatilov informed about the situation "on the ground" in Syria and problems pertaining to the ceasefire, he said.

"From what he told us, we understood that the ceasefire is very important for the Russian side, and it can give a positive impetus to the political settlement," he said.

"We heard what difficulties the political process is facing, and that the regime is facing the problem that there is no single delegation of the opposition with which to hold negotiations," Suleiman said.

The Cairo Group supports the idea of uniting the delegations, but "the regime [of al-Assad] should remember that a single delegation had existed in 2014, and there has been no result," he said.

The existence of several delegations can be useful as well, he said.
