NEW YORK (UN). April 5 (Interfax) - Russia believes it is too early for the UN Security Council to adopt a new resolution on Syria, insisting that a number of amendments must be made to the draft resolution, Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Vladimir Safronkov said on Wednesday.
There is no need to pass any such resolution at this stage since the resolutions adopted by now are quite sufficient for a thorough investigation of the incident, Safronkov said at the UN Security Council meeting held on the situation in the Syrian governorate of Idlib.
But if a UN Security Council member views the new resolution as desirable or necessary, then the document must look in a totally different way, Safronkov said.
The resolution's preamble, he said, must contain the need to thoroughly investigate the incident and identify those guilty, as well as the condemning of any kind of use of chemical weapons.
Besides, the resolution must envisage setting up "a geographically balanced" commission of investigators, with the investigators listed in a document submitted for consideration to the UN Security Council, he said. The resolution must also include guarantees from the groups controlling the area where the incident occurred in Syria to give the investigators free access to the area and all information they might need, Safronkov said.
