Lavrov, Iranian foreign minister believe U.S. strike on Syria harms counterterrorism

MOSCOW. April 10 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif have discussed the situation in Syria in the wake of the U.S. missile strike on the Syrian air base in a phone conversation, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

"Both ministers said such aggressive actions against a sovereign independent state are a major violation of international law, primarily the UN Charter, create threats to regional security, and harm the fight against international terrorism," the ministry said in a report posted on its website.

The ministers "called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident in the Syrian Idlib province, which led to numerous civilian casualties."

"The ministers agreed to maintain close contacts for the purpose of further coordination of interaction on vital issues relating to the bilateral and international agenda," the ministry said.
