U.S. strike on Syria signals support for terrorists - Matviyenko (Part 2)

MOSCOW. April 11 (Interfax) - The United States had no reason to strike the Syrian airbase, Russian Federation Council Chairperson Valentina Matviyenko said.

"There is no doubt that this is an act of aggression against a sovereign state and a gross violation of international law. There was no reason for carrying out such a strike, because even the United States itself said that, presumably, the chemical attack might have been organized by the Syrian authorities," Matviyenko told journalists on Tuesday.

"This strike may be seen as a signal of support for terrorists," she said.

Russia insists on an immediate investigation into what happened in Idlib where the West claims a chemical attack took place, Matviyenko said.

There is a need to impartially assess who used chemical weapons and for what purposes, she said.

"As is known, all chemical weapons were removed from Syria and destroyed under an agreement between Russia and the United States, and the U.S. itself said about it," Matviyenko said.

Russia will continue to insist on an impartial inquiry, she said.

"To that end, there are the United Nations and the UN Security Council to prevent anyone from grossly violating international law and committing such aggressions against sovereign states," Matviyenko said.
