Lavrov calls for respecting presumption of innocence principle in probing Damascus's role in Idlib chemical attack

MOSCOW. April 12 (Interfax) - Damascus should be entitled to the presumption of innocence principle as regards the chemical weapons incident in the Idlib governorate, and it is too early to talk about possible repercussions if the Syrian government's role in it is proven, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"I believe saying what is going to happen if an investigation shows that the Syrian leadership was involved in the chemical attacks is a hypothetical question. We don't want to be engaged in coffee reading," Lavrov said at a press conference following negotiations with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tilelrson in Moscow on Wednesday.

"We want to establish the truth, fully in keeping with the principles of U.S. law and Russian law and in keeping with the laws of any normal country. The presumption of innocence principle must be respected," Lavrov said.
