MOSCOW. April 13 (Interfax) - Armenia and Russia are actively working on the implementation of joint projects in the defense and industrial sector, including in Gyumri, where a Russian military base is situated, Armenian Ambassador to Russia Vardan Toghanyan said.
"We have our proposals, which we have discussed together with Russian colleagues, the Industry Ministry, and with individual corporations, and this is not only the setting up of joint projects in Gyumri," the ambassador said in an interview with Interfax.
"Very active work has already been ongoing in this area, specific projects have already been implemented," he said.
As reported, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan declared plans to set up a defense and industrial complex in Gyumri jointly with Russia during his visit to Russia in mid-March.
"Gyumri actually hosts plants and new vacant capacities, which we would like to put into operation, what is more, a Russian military base is situated there, and there is technical and engineering potential," Toghanyan said.
"This is the possible production of different component parts, microelectronic equipment and radio-controlled parts," the ambassador said.
The diplomat refused to reveal the companies with which talks on cooperation are proceeding, but said that "many companies of the Russian defense and industrial sector," both commercial and state-owned ones, have shown interest regarding projects in Armenia.
