Moscow worried about possible replay of Chilean scenario in Venezuela - diplomat (Part 2)

MOSCOW. April 13 (Interfax) - Moscow is alarmed by the situation in Venezuela and calls for looking for a settlement of the crisis in this country exclusively in line with the constitution, Russian Foreign Ministry Department of Latin America Director Alexander Shchetinin said.

"We cannot fail to mention the growing risk of the scenarios we warned about. We have been groundlessly accused of interfering in internal affairs of others. I mean the scenarios reminiscent of the sad events in another fraternal Latin American country - Chile - in the 1970s," Shchetinin said at an event at the Venezuelan embassy in Moscow on Thursday.

Moscow is following the situation in Venezuela with alarm, he said.

"All political processes unfolding in Venezuela must strictly comply with the constitution, conform to its letter and spirit, and be within the limits of the law," the diplomat said.

"In this context, we cannot but be concerned about statements about the possibility of some immediate response from the outside," Shchetinin said.

"This kind of remarks only encourages radicals to create an atmosphere of uncertainty and instability and foment forcible confrontation," Shchetinin said.

"We are convinced that the political standoff can be overcome by renouncing violence and renewing dialogue in the interest of a joint search for answers and solutions to the socioeconomic challenges facing the country," he said.

Moscow is "convinced that the emergence of a hotbed of tension in Venezuela does not meet either this region's interests or those outside it," he said.
