Lavrov, Ismaili leader Aga Khan discuss situation in Syria, Afghanistan

MOSCOW. April 20 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has discussed the situation in Syria and Afghanistan with Spiritual Leader and Imam of Nizari Ismailism Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, who has arrived in Moscow on a working visit.

"The conversation was centered on discussing the situation in Afghanistan and Syria. The Ismaili leader praised Russia's consistent line in favor of a peaceful political resolution of the conflicts and crises existing in the Near and Middle East," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on its website on Thursday.

"In the context of considering the unfolding situation in Syria, the parties mentioned the importance of an efficient and productive continuation of the intra-Syrian negotiating process involving Syrian government and opposition representatives in Astana and Geneva, with the aim to find ways to settle the Syria crisis through an inclusive dialogue, with due regard for the rights and interests of all ethnic and religious groups across Syrian society," the ministry said.
