MOSCOW. May 2 (Interfax) - Russia supported China's suggestion at the UN Security Council's meeting on Friday calling for the suspension of missile and nuclear tests by North Korea and the termination of joint military exercises by the United States and South Korea in the proximity of North Korea as a starting point for the beginning of talks, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
"During the broad discussions, the Council's members unanimously urged the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] to stop missile and nuclear tests and abide by the relevant resolutions of the UNSC. At the same time, there was also a call about the need to look for political and diplomatic solutions to the nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula," the Russian ministry said.
"In this context, the Russian Federation supported China's suggestion on 'double suspension' [the suspension by Pyongyang of its missile and nuclear tests in exchange for the termination of U.S.-South Korean military drills in the proximity of North Korea] as a starting point for the launch of political talks," it said.
No decisions were adopted at the UNSC meeting on North Korea, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov represented Russia at the meeting.
