Red Cross says over 60 of its employees, volunteers killed in Syria

ST. PETERSBURG. May 12 (Interfax) - Dozens of Red Cross employees and volunteers have been killed in Syria since the start of the armed conflict in this country, head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) office in Russia Davron Mukhamadiev said.

"If we take the conflict in Syria, we have lost more than 60 employees and volunteers of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent in Syria alone since the start of the crisis there," Mukhamadiev said at a press conference at Interfax on Thursday.

"The beginning of the year 2017 was very tragic for us, as the international movement lost 13 people over the first two months of the year," he said.

The number of refugees and displaced persons from the Syrian conflict zone has exceeded six million, he said.
