Azerbaijani foreign minister believes meeting with Armenian counterpart possible

BAKU. May 15 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov believes he may meet with Armenian counterpart Edward Nalbandian to discuss a Nagorno-Karabakh settlement process.

Nalbandian said on Sunday the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs were due to visit the region in June, after which, he said, he might meet with the Azerbaijani foreign minister.

"This [a meeting with Nalbandian] is possible in principle," Mammadyarov told the Azeri Press Agency (APA), referencing the remark by his Armenian colleague.

"The latest meeting of the Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian foreign ministers in Moscow gave me an impression that peace was possible in exchange for [Armenian] troops' withdrawal or based on the land for peace principle. This has been the logic of the negotiating process for the past 12 years," he said.

Yet "there is no such thing in diplomacy as talks for the sake of talks", Mammadyarov said.

"It is obvious to everyone that Armenia should withdraw its troops from the occupied Azerbaijani lands," he said.
