Manila interested in Russian weapons, specific agreements yet to be reached - Rosoboronexport chief

ZAVIDOVO (Tver region). May 24 (Interfax) - The Philippines have taken interest in Russian weapons, yet there have been no substantive negotiations to this end, Rosoboronexport General Director Alexander Mikheyev told reporters on Wednesday.

"The Philippine president has cut short his visit to Russia, following the escalation of tensions in his country. He is definitely interested in mobile anti-terrorist systems, small arms and ammunition in order to fight ISIL (a terrorist organization banned in Russia)," Mikheyev said.

There have been no substantive negotiations on any deliveries so far, he said.

"A visit has been paid, and an inquiry has been made. We will process specific requests together with the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation and will consider the issue together with our industry, manufacturers; we will determine priorities, sources of financing, and deadlines and will contact the operators - the defense and interior ministries and the police - in the context of the inquiries made by our Philippine colleagues," Mikheyev said.

The Philippines has also exhibited interest in security systems for airports, energy and other critical infrastructures, he said.

Many countries are keen to acquire such systems and weapons against the backdrop of the mounting terrorist threat, Mikheyev said.
