ROSTOV-ON-DON. May 24 (Interfax) - The North Caucasus District Military Court rendered a judgment of conviction for a resident of Dagestan, who had undergone training in the Islamic State, at a hearing in Rostov-on-Don on Wednesday, the court's spokesperson Alyona Katkalo told Interfax.
"According to the indictment, the defendant underwent training in an illegal armed unit affiliated with ISIL in Iraq in July 2015. He had purchased a fake passport and arrived in Makhachkala, were he was detained at the city airport, in May 2016," Katkalo said.
The defendant was charged under articles 'training for the purpose of engaging in terrorist activities', 'attempt to cross a border illegally' and 'forgery of documents' of the Russian Criminal Code, she said.
The court sentenced the Dagestan resident to seven years in a high-security penal colony and a fine in the amount of 15,000 rubles.
The Islamic State (ISIL) is a terrorist group banned in Russia.
