YALTA. June 6 (Interfax) - The Federation Council may set up a commission, which would put forward proposals on the prevention of Western interference in Russian internal affairs, Federation Council International Affairs Committee Chairman Konstantin Kosachyov said.
"There is no doubt that in the time left until the presidential election of March 2018 we will be facing very active and insistent attempts to influence the course of that election campaign. So, we would like to set up a permanent body, which would, firstly, monitor the activity pertaining to Russia and, secondly, put forward proposals on the improvement of current Russian laws," Kosachyov told reporters on Tuesday.
The Federation Council will have hearings on the prevention of interference in Russian internal affairs on Wednesday, and a draft of the hearings' recommendations suggests the idea of forming that commission at the Federation Council, he said.
"It would be a permanent body, rather than an ad hoc entity. No doubt, the work it is tasked with doing is long-term. The attempts to interfere in our internal affairs and to impact our political life have been systemic in a number of countries and international institutions and, obviously, have a trend to intensify in every one of our election cycles," Kosachyov said.
He said he primarily implied Western nations - the United States and its NATO allies.
