Azerbaijan begins large-scale exercise with armor, aviation

BAKU. June 19 (Interfax) - About 23,000 personnel are taking part in a large-scale operative-tactical exercise in Azerbaijan, the country's defense ministry said.

"A large-scale operative-tactical exercise began on June 19 which aims to test the combat readiness of the troops, organization of the command and control of forces and equipment, and their interaction. The exercise involves up to 23,000 personnel," the ministry said in a statement.

Also taking part in the exercise are up to 120 tanks and armored vehicles, up to 180 rocket artillery weapons of varying caliber, multiple rocket launchers and mortars, up to 30 various warplanes, as well as new electronic reconnaissance systems and unmanned aerial vehicles, the statement says.

The exercise is due to end on June 24.
