Russian-Armenian agreement on joint armed force forwarded to Duma for ratification

MOSCOW. June 28 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has forwarded an agreement between Moscow and Yerevan on a joint group of troops (forces) of the Armenian and Russian armed forces to the State Duma for ratification, as is evident from a report posted on the Duma database on Tuesday.

The agreement was signed in Moscow on November 30, 2016.

"The united group is designed to ensure military security in the Caucasus collective security region," an explanatory note to the bill on the agreement's ratification says.

The said joint group of forces will be tasked with "timely uncovering immediate preparations for an armed attack (aggression) on the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia within the region's boundaries and repelling it," the document says.

The group will also be responsible for guarding the land section of the two countries' borders and be involved in protecting their aerospace boundaries.

The document stipulates that a decision on deploying and using the joint group of forces shall be made jointly by the commanders-in-chief of Russia and Armenia.

The agreement has been concluded for five years, with the option of its tacit extension for further five-year periods.
