Russian BMEWS can control all missile launches - RTI Concern chief

MOSCOW. July 3 (Interfax-AVN) - The creation of an echeloned Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) is going as planned, RTI Systems Concern board chairman Sergei Boyev told journalists.

"You know that, at the end of last year, high-factory-readiness Voronezh radiolocation stations were deployed in Orsk, Barnaul and Yeniseysk. Thus, for the first time we recreated the continuous radiolocation field in Russia. Doubtless, today we are capable of monitoring launches of all means of aerospace attack from all directions," Boyev said after an offsite meeting of the Federation Council defense and security committee at the company's offices.

In accordance with the instruction of the Russian president, RTI Concern's enterprises have since 2008 been working to design and create next-generation radiolocation stations of the national echeloned BMEWS, Boyev said.

"Underlying the construction of the new radars is our know-how: the high-factory-readiness technology. Our design engineers introduced this technology on radars of various wavelength bands: in meters and decimeters," Boyev, who is also the chief designer of the national BMEWS, said.

Over the past eight years RTI has built radiolocation stations and systems and delivered them to the Defense Ministry for operation in Lekhtusi, Armavir, Irkutsk, Kaliningrad, Barnaul, Yeniseysk and Orsk.

"We have a more serious task: to create a multi-band system, an echeloned ballistic missile early warning system, including of a space echelon, which is what NPO Kometa is working on today. All this work is being carried out in accordance with the plan that is largely being complied with. We hope to fulfill on time the whole program of creating a Russian BMEWS in its new quality," Boyev said.

The A-135 anti-ballistic missile system that provides missile defense for Moscow and the Central Industrial District is due to be upgraded by 2020. The echeloned national missile defense system is due be completed by 2025.
