Russian fighters take off 6 times over past week to intercept foreign reconnaissance planes

MOSCOW. July 3 (Interfax) - Fighters of the Russian Aerospace Forces have taken off six times over the past week to intercept foreign reconnaissance planes flying near the Russian borders, the Russian Defense Ministry's website reported on Monday.

Fifteen reconnaissance flights of foreign aircraft have been observed near the Russian border in the past week, the report said.

Most flights, eight, were performed by U.S. aircraft, such as RC-135 jets and a Global Hawk strategic drone.

The website also reported reconnaissance planes of Sweden, Norway and Japan seen near the Russian border.

Russian fighters repeatedly took off in June to escort U.S. RC-135 reconnaissance jets and B-52 strategic bombers flying over the Baltic Sea.
