Russia issues notice of Navy live fire drills off Syrian coastline

LONDON. July 7 (Interfax) - Ships of the Russian Navy will hold another live fire exercise in the eastern Mediterranean, off the Syrian coastline, on Friday, according to the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and vessels.

"The Russian Navy will have the drills on July 7," the NOTAM, which provided the drills' coordinates, said. The notice to vessels said it would be 'a live fire drill'.

Russian ships may be firing shells in the period until 6 p.m. Moscow time in the Mediterranean international waters, on the perimeter of the Syrian territorial waters, the notices said.

The same area was closed for aircraft and vessels on Wednesday due to live fire exercises.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on that day that Tupolev Tu-95MS strategic bombers fired brand-new X-101 cruise missiles on targets of the ISIL terrorist group (banned in Russia) on the border between Syria's Hama and Homs provinces.
