MOSCOW. July 10 (Interfax) - The agreement to cease fire in a number of Syrian southwestern provinces reached by the Russian and U.S. presidents at their meeting on the G20 summit's sidelines will have a positive effect on the situation in other Syrian regions and give a boost to the Geneva negotiations, leader of the Syrian opposition's 'Moscow' platform Qadri Jamil said.
"This agreement is a very important and positive step. It will play a substantial role in the political settlement of the Syrian conflict. I would like to remind you of the extremely complex situation that has taken shape in the country's south, the Daraa area, in the past few months [...] hence, the understanding reached by the two presidents [of Russia and the United States] will have a positive effect on other parts of Syria and spur on the Geneva negotiations," Jamil said in an interview published by the newspaper Izvestia on Monday.
He also said he was expecting the intra-Syrian talks, which would resume in Geneva on July 10, to bring positive results.
"Consultations between representatives of the three opposition platforms, the 'Riyadh', 'Cairo' and 'Moscow' ones, were held shortly before the round in Geneva [...]. They still disagree over certain matters, but the dialogue itself was extremely fruitful. All opposition representatives finally agreed that they should meet and sit down at one negotiating table," Jamil said.
In the end, Syrian opposition forces agreed to form one delegation to the Geneva talks, Jamil said.
"We stand for coordination between all opposition platforms and the account of their approaches to Syrian settlement issues, in particular, within the Geneva process," Jamil said.
