Human Rights Council concerned with reports of possible mass murder in Chechnya, to join ombudsman's work

MOSCOW. July 10 (Interfax) - The Russian Presidential Human Rights Council will be involved in the work of Human Rights Commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova on examining the Novaya Gazeta newspaper's information on possible mass murder of citizens in the Chechen Republic, the council's head Mikhail Fedotov said.

"Now, when we have received the Novaya Gazeta's request, we have an opportunity to examine the situation more closely and join the work conducted by Tatyana Nikolayevna Moskalkova on this matter," Fedotov told Interfax on Monday.

"We will coordinate our efforts with the Russian human rights commissioner to increase the efficiency of our work and avoid unnecessary duplication," he said.

On Sunday, Novaya Gazeta reported that at least 27 people who had been earlier detained for uncertain reasons at different times had been killed in Chechnya in the early hours of January 26.
