Elbrus combat logistics ship goes north for final trials

MOSCOW. Aug 11 (Interfax-AVN) - The Elbrus combat logistics ship has gone north for final trials, a spokesman for the Severnaya Verf shipyard told Interfax.

"The Elbrus combat logistics ship of Project 23120 has left the Severnaya Verf shipyard of United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) to northern areas for the final stage of testing. The voyage to the north will take ten days," the spokesman said.

The crew and the shipbuilders will check the ship's seaworthiness and test the main power unit, the multiple-beam echo sounder, and the cathodic protection system, he said.

"Once the Elbrus reaches its destination, three-week tests of principal ship systems and equipment will begin and interaction with aircraft will be practiced," the source said.

The Elbrus is the lead combat logistics ship of Project 23120. Severnaya Verf is building another ship of the project, the Vsevolod Bobrov. The ship features a new dynamic position system, which can keep it in the designated location in any weather, two electric-hydraulic cranes with a lifting capacity of 50 tonnes, towing engines with a thrust of 120 and 25 tonnes, a cargo deck of more than 700 square meters, and other innovations.

The ship can load, transport and transship cargo, tow ships, up to an aircraft carrier, take part in rescue operations, give medical assistance to people in distress, map the seabed, and search for sunken objects.
