Russian forces suggest setting up local reconciliation committees in Syria's de-escalation areas

LATAKIA (Syria). Aug 17 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian center for reconciliation of opposing sides in Syria has suggested that local reconciliation committees be set up in populated localities within de-escalation areas.

"We suggest setting up committees for local reconciliation in these [de-escalation] areas that will comprise credible authoritative leaders of the opposition, alongside representatives of residential communities and the Syrian government," the head of the Russian center for reconciliation of opposing sides in Syria, Lt. Gen. Sergei Kuralenko, said in a televised address to Syrians on Thursday.

The Kazakh capital Astana hosted the fifth round of the Syria talks in July. During the talks, sides discussed possible parameters of future de-escalation areas.
