Pacific Fleet holds distressed submarine rescue exercise

MOSCOW. Aug 21 (Interfax) - Pacific Fleet rescuers held an exercise in rescuing a mock submarine in distress, Eastern Military District spokesman for the Fleet, Vladimir Matveyev, said.

"The crew of the Georgy Kozmin rescue vessel conducted a search for a submarine mockup lying 85 meters deep in the assigned area of a Pacific Fleet training range. Upon discovery, an AS-30 deep submergence vehicle was sent down, which timely approached the equipment, mated with the hatch and conducted a practice in removing the crew of the mock distressed submarine," Matveyev said.

Concurrently, a robotic remotely-controlled vehicle, Venom, was operating at the depth to monitor and ensure safety of the underwater operation, the spokesman said.

"The deepwater exercise was held for several hours, which enabled the crews of the Georgy Kozmin rescue vessel and the AS-30 deep submergence vehicle to practice the whole range of tasks set before them," Matveyev said.
