NEW YORK. Sept 4 (Interfax) - The deployment of additional contingent of U.S. troops to Afghanistan in order to fight against terrorism would not resolve the issue due to the absence of a political element of the settlement of the situation in the country, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said.
"It's impossible to resolve the Afghan issue by force. The political element of the settlement in this long-suffering country is absent to a significant degree. And such an important and alarming factor as an increase of the influence and the size of ISIL [banned in Russia] in Afghanistan is not taken into consideration, as well as the issue of drugs production in the country," Nebenzya told Russian reporters in New York.
It is necessary to "consolidate efforts of regional players, and political process is required," the high-ranking diplomat said.
"One certainly should talk with Americans in order to understand what they want and how they want to achieve victory in Afghanistan. And it would be a good idea to hold serious meaningful consultations on this issue," he said.
"We know that Afghanistan is such a country were no one ever won by military means. One can say it's an undefeated country," he said.
