Consensus on communications, schools between Chisinau, Transdniestria to help switch to new round of 5+2 talks - Moldovan deputy PM

CHISINAU. Sept 8 (Interfax) - Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Gheorghe Balan and Foreign Minister of the unrecognized Transdniestrian Moldovan Republic Vitalie Ignatiev discussed issues envisioned by the Berlin Protocol at a meeting in Bender.

"This includes the restoration of telephone communication, the registration of Transdniestrian license plates, the issue of schools with instruction in the Romanian language, and also plots of land belonging to Moldovan citizens in Dubasari. Plus guarantees of free movement of people and goods, the restoration of railroad services in the north, and the evacuation of toxic substances from Transdniestria," Balan said at a news briefing on Friday.

"The negotiations have helped reach a possible compromise on three issues, namely telephone communication, access of Moldovan citizens to their plots of land on the other side of the Tiraspol-Ribnita highway, and schools using the Latin alphabet on the left bank of the Dniester river," he said.

"These issues will be addressed by special working groups. And if we manage to find an option acceptable to both parties, a new round of 5+2 format talks will be arranged in the near future," Balan said.

"In order to unify Moldova's policy toward Transdniestria conflict settlement, the government is drawing up a relevant bill," he said.

"The unified view of the Moldovan authorities on the problem should help achieve specific results at negotiations with Transdniestria in the future," he said.
