MOSCOW. Sept 11 (Interfax) - The Russian Prosecutor General's Office has endorsed the indictment in the case against two members of a gang led by terrorists Shamil Basayev and Khattab on charges of an attack at Russian servicemen in Chechnya in October 1999.
"Russian Deputy Prosecutor General Ivan Sydoruk endorsed the indictment in the criminal case against two natives of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic on charges of participation in a gang and an attempt on life of servicemen," the Prosecutor General's Office said on its website.
According to investigators, the defendants jointed the Karachay Jamaat gang in 1999, and the gang, alongside other units under the overall leadership of Basayev and Khattab, committed an armed attack at servicemen of the Russian Foreign Ministry near the village of Chervlyonnayya, Chechnya's Shelkovskoy district, on October 4 of the same year, it said.
Fifteen troops were killed in the attack and 28 sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity.
"A restrictive measure in the form of arrest was imposed on the defendants. Following the endorsement of the indictment, the criminal case was forwarded to the Chechen Republic's Supreme Court for the consideration on the merits. An investigation against other members of the gang, who are on wanted lists, is continuing," the Prosecutor General's Office said.
