Moscow, Riyadh prioritize antiterrorist efforts in Mideast - Lavrov

MOSCOW. Oct 5 (Interfax) - Russia and Saudi Arabia share the view that priority should be given to combating terrorism in the Middle East, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"In considering all the problems of this region [the Middle East], the parties expressed their common understanding that priority should be attached to a decisive fight against terrorism," Lavrov said at a joint press conference with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir in Moscow on Thursday.

"Some initiatives that both the Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia are pressing for at the UN and in the international arena have precisely this aim," he said.

"It's certainly clear that fighting terrorism implies resolutely fighting an extremist ideology. We familiarized our Saudi counterparts with the relevant approaches that the UN Security Council is currently considering," Lavrov said.

"We expect that the Russia-Islamic World strategic vision group set up between Russia and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation will make its contribution to these efforts," he said.
