N. Korean nuclear, missile programs undermine int'l security - Japanese delegation head at IPU Assembly

ST. PETERSBURG. Oct 16 (Interfax) - North Korea's nuclear tests and its missile program are undermining security in the world, the international community should take urgent actions with regard to this, the Japanese delegation head said at an Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly session in St. Petersburg.

"On September 3, despite the international community's calls to show restraint, North Korea has carried out its sixth nuclear test. It has been a largest nuclear test ever. The yield of this blast is said to be tens of times stronger than that in Hiroshima," the Japanese delegation head said in a speech at the 137th IPU Assembly in St. Petersburg on Sunday.

"North Korea's test launch of ballistic missiles is not only an enormous threat for Japan and neighboring countries, but also for the region as a whole. This undermines peace and security for all of us," he said.

"We should take concrete actions right now to ensure the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and nuclear disarmament," he said.

Japan, as the only country hit by nuclear bombing, thinks that North Korea's actions are unacceptable, he said.

"We believe that the international community should also take a clear position regarding these irresponsible actions taken by North Korea. We harshly condemn nuclear tests; we should again urge North Korea to scrap its nuclear and missile programs," he said.

It is important to ensure the implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions on this problem, the Japanese delegation head said.

"I believe that IPU members should ask that their governments ensure the observance of these resolutions," he said.

The international community should demonstrate solidarity, the Japanese representative also said.

"If we do not undertake urgent actions, there is a real threat that we will face horrible consequences in the near future. This issue requires our urgent actions," he said.
