U.S. actions on Iranian, Korean tracks lead to arms race, pose risk of WMD proliferation - Lavrov

SOCHI. Oct 16 (Interfax) - The de-facto withdrawal of the United States from the Iran nuclear deal and the threat to use force against Pyongyang are exacerbating the global negative trends, among them the arms race and the risk of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at the Society and Global Politics panel session at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Sochi on Monday.

"The use of military force bypassing the UN Security Council, the practice of unilateral sanctions, and the extraterritorial application of national laws have significantly eroded the authority of the international law," Lavrov said.

A number of countries "are seeking to increase their military might at any cost", as they fear they may follow the Yugoslav, Iraqi, and Libyan scenarios, he said. It results in "a dangerous arms race and the risk of uncontrolled proliferation of weapons of mass destruction," he said.

"Unfortunately, these negative trends have been exacerbated by the U.S. decision on the de facto withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program and the threats of Washington solve problems of the Korean Peninsula by military means," Lavrov said.
