Eight Hizb ut-Tahrir members detained in Tatarstan

KAZAN. Oct 18 (Interfax) - Eight locations used by members of the Almetyevsk cell of the Hizb ut-Tahrir international terrorist organization, which is banned in Russia, have been searched in Russia's internal republic of Tatarstan, the regional branch of the Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Wednesday.

"Large quantities of the terrorist organization's outlawed materials, handwritten notes, and recruitment reports were found during the searches. Documentary evidence proving that the suspects conducted anti-constitutional propaganda among the republic's Muslims was seized, and eight persons, including the leaders of the terrorist cell, were detained," the department said in a statement.

FSB conducted the searches in cooperation with the Tatarstan department of the Interior Ministry and the Russian National Guard as part of a criminal case against seven resident of Almetyevsk and one resident of Tatarstan's Leninogorsk district launched on charges of organizing or participating in the activity of a terrorist organization.

The Russian Supreme Court recognized Hizb ut-Tahrir as a terrorist organization and banned its activity in Russia on April 14, 2003.
