MOSCOW. Oct 18 (Interfax) - Turkey has set up an observation outpost in the Syrian governorate of Idlib and intends to continue working to deescalate the tension in the region, Turkish Ambassador to Russia Huseyin Dirioz said.
"As you know, the issue that has been discussed very often lately is the region, the zone where a special regime has been established. It's the territory of Idlib," Dirioz told journalists on Wednesday.
"We just recently set up an observation outpost there, and we are continuing to work in this direction. It is aimed at establishing a ceasefire and ensuring a political settlement," he said.
"There are four de-escalation areas in Syria today," he said.
The Turkish armed forces began an operation to set up a de-escalation area in the Idlib governorate in northwestern Syria on October 9. The Syrian authorities demanded that Turkish troops be immediately withdrawn from the country and described Ankara's actions as a gross violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
