Iraqi foreign minister lauds Russia's 'extremely friendly' stance on Iraqi Kurdistan referendum

MOSCOW. Oct 23 (Interfax) - The Iraqi Kurdistan referendum is unconstitutional, and the entire world shares the opinion of Baghdad, Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said at the beginning of talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"Everyone understands that the referendum was unconstitutional, since Article 1 of our constitution defines Iraq is a single and sovereign state. The constitution has indeed allowed our Kurdish brothers to create their own region, but this does not mean they have the right to separate from Iraq," al-Jaafari said.

"The whole world has taken our side, and no one has supported this referendum. This includes, among others, the League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Security Council," he said.

"I'd like to say that Russia has taken an extremely friendly stance on this matter," al-Jaafari said.
