MOSCOW. Nov 14 (Interfax) - The Russian president's special representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, who met with a delegation of senior members of the Palestinian movement Fatah, stressed the importance of implementing intra-Palestinian agreements to bring about a substantial improvement in the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
"The conversation involved a substantive exchange of views on the problems of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, as well as the state of affairs in the Palestinian territories with an emphasis on the task of overcoming internal Palestinian divisions, given the noticeable positive changes that occurred recently on this track," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website on Monday evening.
The Fatah delegation thanked Russia for its consistent efforts in the interest of restoring Palestinian national unity as an essential precondition for realizing the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people, the statement said.
"The Russian side confirmed its principled stance in favor of implementing all intra-Palestinian agreements with the aim of achieving genuine unity on the political platform of the Palestine Liberation Organization and to substantially improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip," the ministry said. "Such a development should help break the current deadlock in the Middle East peace process and lead to constructive Israeli-Palestinian negotiations on the known basis of international law," the ministry said.
