Gen. Lopyrev sentenced to 10 years in jail, 150-mln-rub. fine for taking bribes

MOSCOW. Nov 17 (Interfax) - The Znamensky Garrison Military Court has held a mobile court hearing in the Sochi Garrison Military Court to hand down a 10-year sentence to Gen. Gennady Lopyrev of the Federal Guard Service, or FSO, who was convicted of corruption charges, his lawyer Ruslan Zakalyuzhny said.

"The court sentenced Lopyrev to 10 years in prison and ordered him to pay 150 million rubles as a fine," Zakalyuzhny told Interfax on Friday.

Lopyrev was found guilty of two counts of accepting bribes for a total amount of almost 6.3 million rubles and also of illegal possession of ammunition.

The general did not admit the charges.

The defense team is planning to appeal the sentence.

Zakalyuzhny noted that the court refrained from stripping Lopyrev of his state decorations or his rank of general.

He also clarified that once the sentence takes legal effect, the property of Lopyrev's relatives seized earlier will be released. The seized property included apartments in Moscow and Sochi, a land parcel in the Leningrad region, a Porsche Cayenne car belonging to Lopyrev's daughter-in-law, a 2007 Mercedes Benz belonging to Lopyrev's wife, and her 32 sq. m. vacation house. Seized monetary assets included 63 million rubles, one million euros and $350,000, which were found when investigators searched the apartment of Lopyrev's son, Alexander.

A total of 6 million rubles earlier seized from Lopyrev's bank account will remain frozen.

The future of that money will be decided later.

Earlier on November 26, 2016, the 94th Garrison Military Court ordered the arrest of Lopyrev, who had been detained on suspicion of corruption.

Investigators believe that Lopyrev was taking bribes from executives of several commercial companies for general patronage in the signing and execution of government contracts for building and renovation works.

Police seized about 100 pistol cartridges, which, as later became evident, belonged to Lopyrev.

The Znamensky Garrison Military Court found all charges proven.
