Russian Defense Ministry proposes excluding al-Rukban refugee camp in Syria from U.S.-controlled area (Part 2)

HMEIMIM. Nov 27 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian military officials have offered the United States to exclude the al-Rukban refugee camp located near the U.S. base in at-Tanf from the zone it controls in Syria.

"The Russian center for reconciliation of opposing sides once again offers the U.S. side to exclude the al-Rukban refugee camp and the road to it from the area controlled by U.S. group of forces in at-Tanf," Lt. Gen. Sergei Kuralenko, the center's head, told reporters on Monday.

"By closing the area of 55 kilometers surrounding the U.S. base in at-Tanf, the U.S. group created a territory, where, according to various estimates, over 50,000 people are being isolated. An unprecedented case of long-term obstruction of humanitarian aid delivery to people in need was created," Kuralenko said.

Despite recent consultations, the U.S. side has still failed to provide international organizations access for delivery of humanitarian aid to the al-Rukban refugee camp, he said.

If the al-Rukban camp is excluded from the U.S.-controlled area, "immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to people in need in al-Rukban" will be possible, "while Syrian governmental forces ensure security," he said.

"It's not possible to obtain enough food and receive qualified medical assistance in the refugee camp, and children are unable to attend schools," Kuralenko said.
