Recruiter for outlawed Tablighi Jamaat gets 2-year sentence for membership in extremist organization

MOSCOW. Nov 29 (Interfax) - The Babushkinsky District Court in Moscow has sentenced Kubanychbek Sadyrov to two years in a penitentiary for participating in the Tablighi Jamaat international religious group, which is outlawed in Russia as extremist.

"Sadyrov has been sentenced to two years in a general penitentiary," court press secretary Natalia Afanasenko told Interfax on Wednesday.

The defendant was found guilty under the Russian Criminal Code article concerning membership in a civil or religious group branded as extremist and outlawed by a valid court order.

Sadyrov pleaded guilty as charged and regretted his actions, which entitled him to a special proceeding.

The Federal Security Service's department in Moscow and the Moscow region said late last year it had stopped the illegal activity of a Tablighi Jamaat cell and detained its members.

According to the Federal Security Service, the extremist group was supervised by foreign emissaries and recruited citizens of Russia and other countries.
