Russian military protects major aid convoy in Syria - Kuralenko

HMEIMIM (Syria). Nov 30 (Interfax) - The Russian military in Syria helped ensure the safety of a major humanitarian convoy to the Eastern Ghouta de-escalation area, where a ceasefire was declared on November 28-29.

"The safety of another joint humanitarian convoy of the United Nations, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, and the International Committee of the Red Cross was ensured," the head of the Russian center for reconciliation of opposing sides in Syria, Lieut. Gen. Sergei Kuralenko, told reporters on Wednesday.

Government forces, Russian servicemen, and leaders of armed opposition units in the third Eastern Ghouta de-escalation area were involved in the provision of security for the aid convoy, he said.

Humanitarian supplies totaling 54 tonnes were delivered to residents in the Nashabia populated locality, Kuralenko said. The Russian military participated in several other humanitarian operations in Syria over the past 24 hours, the general said.

On Monday, the center urged all conflicting sides to cease hostilities and introduce a ceasefire in the Eastern Ghouta de-escalation area on November 28-29.

The ceasefire envisions a ban on hostilities and the use of all types of weapons.

Syria is operating four de-escalation areas.
