Russian General Staff chief: U.S. intents to gain foothold in Syria remain not entirely clear

MOSCOW. Dec 6 (Interfax) - The United States' aspirations to gain a foothold in Syria are not entirely clear, Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the chief of the Russian Armed Forces' General Staff and first deputy defense minister, said at an annual briefing for foreign military attaches.

"Amid the government forces' success in liberating the territory of their state and bearing in mind the U.S.'s stance on the commitment to territorial integrity and independence of the Syrian Arab Republic, the U.S.'s intentions to gain a foothold in Syria remain not entirely clear," Gerasimov said.
