Russian citizen accused of treason remanded into custody until Jan 29

MOSCOW. Dec 12 (Interfax) - The Lefortovo District Court of Moscow has ordered that Russian citizen Alexei Zhitnyuk, suspected of treason, be remanded into custody for two months, court spokesperson Yekaterina Krasnova told Interfax on Tuesday.

"A court ruling dated November 30 orders that Alexei Zhitnyuk be remanded into custody until January 29, 2018 as a measure of restraint. The defense team has already appealed this decision, but a date for the Moscow City Court's consideration of this appeal has not yet been set," she said.

Zhitnyuk faces accusations on a count of treason.

According to media reports, the Russian Federal Security Service has accused Zhitnyuk of passing state secrets related to the Russian Navy to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.
