Dagestan resident jailed for 5 years for helping militants in Syria

MAKHACHKALA. Dec 13 (Interfax) - A court in Dagestan's Magaramkent district has sentenced a local resident to five years of imprisonment at a medium-security facility for joining a militant group as a mercenary, a spokesperson for the regional prosecutor's office told Interfax on Tuesday.

"The court found that in August 2014, the man arrived to a foreign country on a false passport and joined militants for money. He underwent combat, physical, and tactical training, received weaponry and munitions, and for the following two months was involved in an armed conflict," the spokesperson said.

The court found the defendant guilty of participating in an armed conflict as a mercenary.

The man had an earlier conviction for being a member of a militant group.
