Russian ambassador to UN doubts U.S. desire to resolve N. Korea problem peacefully

NEW YORK. Dec 15 (Interfax) - Solving the Korean peninsula's problems militarily is not an option, but Russia doubts the sincerity of United States' declarations of aiming to settle them peacefully, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said.

"Doubtless the refusal of the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] to comply with the UN SC resolutions is unacceptable. At the same time, one should not allow attempts to resolve the region's long-running problems militarily," Nebenzya said at UN Security Council meeting.

"To the two months of lull on the part of Pyongyang, Washington and its allies responded by conducting unscheduled maneuvers and exercises of an unprecedented scale near the borders in October and December. And by introducing new unilateral sanctions and classifying it [the DPRK] as a state sponsor of terrorism," Nebenzya said.

"All these steps make one think hard about the sincerity and preferableness of peaceful resolution of the crisis around the DPRK," the ambassador said.
