MOSCOW. Dec 19 (Interfax) - Russia is disappointed that the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on Jerusalem, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"We regret that the U.S., a permanent United Nations Security Council member, which presents itself as a key mediator in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, has in fact once again displayed approaches going against the international community's will and eroding the international legal foundation of the Middle East peace process," the ministry said in a statement posted on its official website on Tuesday.
The draft resolution presented by Egypt on behalf of a group of Arab countries was a response by Arab states to U.S. President Donald Trump's decision on December 6 to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and instruct the Department of State to analyze the transfer of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.
"This decision was received with harsh criticism around the world, not only in its Arab and Muslim parts, and seriously escalated tensions on the West Bank and in Gaza," the Foreign Ministry said.
