MOSCOW. Dec 19 (Interfax) - A total of 137 career officers and agents of foreign intelligence services have been convicted for intelligence activities in Russia over the past five years, Russian Federal Security Service Director Alexander Bortnikov said.
"Foreign special services are still aspiring to penetrate all the areas of activities of our state. Naturally, this is tackled vigorously by counterintelligence men. In particular, a total of 137 foreign intelligence officers and their agents have been convicted in Russia since 2012," Bortnikov said in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta that was published on Tuesday.
Bortnikov also noted that the work of 120 foreign and international non-governmental organizations serving as "a tool of the foreign intelligence community" was stopped in interaction with other Russian state authorities.
A total of 140 individuals were convicted as a result of the measures to protect information that constitutes a State or military secrets, Bortnikov said.
