Syria talks participants begin arriving in Astana - Kazakh Foreign Ministry (Part 2)

ASTANA. Dec 20 (Interfax) - Some members of the armed Syrian opposition's delegation have arrived in Astana for the 8th round of negotiations, Kazakh Foreign Ministry spokesman Anuar Zhainakov told the press in Astana on Wednesday.

"The heads of the Turkish and Iranian delegations and some members of the Syrian opposition's delegation have already arrived," Zhainakov said.

"We are expecting the head of the Russian delegation to arrive before the end of the day," he said.

Zhainakov could not say who will head the armed Syrian opposition's delegation.

It is yet unknown whether the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, will participate in the round. "That remains to be seen," Zhainakov said.

"There will be no meetings today; delegation experts will be meeting tomorrow in bilateral and trilateral formats, and the plenary meeting will take place on the 22nd," he said.

Astana will play host to the 8th round of the Syria de-escalation talks on December 21-22. Russia, Turkey, and Iran are guaranteeing ceasefire implementation.
