U.S. acknowledges that Russia has restored its geo-political presence, becomes its rival along with China - MP Shamanov

MOSCOW. Dec 20 (Interfax) - The fact that Russia has been mentioned in the U.S. national security strategy as a key threat is the acknowledgement of Russia as a super-power, much like China, the Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, Vladimir Shamanov, told Interfax.

"Russia's designation as a key threat in the national security strategy is the expected result of our victory in Syria; they, the United States, had to find an excuse for the efforts they were making in recent years," Shamanov said.

Obviously," Russia has restored its geopolitical presence amongst the world's leading powers and, just like China, is the main rival of the Americans, considering that the three super-powers are again on top of the decision-making process," he said.

The U.S. administration presented the national security strategy on Monday, and President Donald Trump laid down its key provisions in his speech. The ambitions of Russia and China, the conduct of the rogue states, Iran and North Korea, as well as international terrorism were designated as the primary threats.
