ASTANA. Dec 20 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan has supported the UN Security Council's decision to extend by one year its resolution on transborder humanitarian aid to Syria, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
"Kazakhstan has supported the decision, considering the importance of this resolution for humanitarian supplies to over 3.5 million people in northern and eastern Syria. Kazakhstan remains committed to international efforts, which seek to improve the humanitarian situation in Syria," the ministry said.
The Kazakh delegation to the UN underlined the importance of preserving every modality in the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria, including by means of the transborder mechanism envisaged by Resolution 2165.
"At the same time, the Kazakh delegation urged the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs to do its best for improving the monitoring and transparency of humanitarian operations conducted under the aegis of the United Nations and by non-governmental organizations in Syria," the statement said.
"The impossibility of settling the Syria crisis with humanitarian efforts alone was underscored, and the Kazakh side expressed the hope that UN Security Council members would support the Geneva platform and the Astana process, which had become principal parts of the peace architecture currently created by the international community under the complex circumstances," the statement said.
The Kazakh delegation also urged the interested sides to implement the ceasefire, which would help bring peace to Syria.
