MOSCOW. Feb 8 (Interfax) - Moscow and Beijing are willing to act as guarantors of North Korea's security if Pyongyang freezes its nuclear missile program, Russian Ambassador to North Korea Alexander Matsegora said.
"If this becomes necessary at some moment and Pyongyang displays an interest in Russia's and China's guarantees, I think the matter could be considered both in Beijing and Moscow, but perhaps it's still quite a way off," Matsegora said in an interview shown on the Rossiya-24 (VGTRK) television channel when asked whether Russia and China could act as guarantors of North Korea's security if North Korea freezes its nuclear missile program.
The ultimate goal of the Russian-Chinese plan of settling the situation on the Korean Peninsula is precisely "to set up a mechanism to maintain peace and security in Northeast Asia," Matsegora said.
"Naturally, the matter concerns security for all countries of the region, including the DPRK," he said.
