MOSCOW. Feb 28 (Interfax) - Over 2,000 sites, including social networks, are controlled by law enforcement agencies as part of the anti-extremism efforts, Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev said.
"Over 2,000 sites, including popular social networks, are now under control. Four organizations were recognized as extremist in accordance with the established procedures based on Interior Ministry materials and banned last year," Kolokoltsev said at a board meeting in the Interior Ministry on the results of year 2017.
Active members of dangerous nationalist groups have been detained in some regions of Russia, he said.
"Serious attention was given to attempts to spread destructive ideology on the Internet. Its capabilities are increasingly used by leaders of radical structures to recruit new members, coordinate actions and organize extremist actions," Kolokoltsev said.
