TOKYO. March 15 (Interfax) - Japan cannot support the 'freeze for freeze' initiative of Russia and China for the conflict on the Korean Peninsula, but favors a peaceful settlement of the Korea crisis, a source in the Japanese Foreign Ministry told Interfax.
"There is no comparison between a freeze on North Korea's military exercises and missile launches and a freeze on military exercises held in the region by South Korea, the United States, and Japan. These are two different things. This is what Japan thinks about this initiative," the source said.
He said, though, that "the problem of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the unification of two Koreas should be resolved peacefully."
Russia and China put forward the 'freeze for freeze' initiative suggesting that North Korea should stop nuclear and missile tests, while the United States, South Korea, and Japan should stop holding joint exercises in the region.
